Eugania: Palio dei 10 Comuni in Montagnana

  • Period of the performance: in August and on the 1st Sunday of September
  • the so called "Palio dei 10 Comuni" is a horse race among ten communes of the ancient Sculdascia of Montagnana, which celebrates the liberation of the town from the cruel Ezzelino da Romano
  • the race takes place in the medieval vallum surrounding Montagnana under the Rocca degli Alberi
  • the performance is proceded form different medieval cerimonies, races, duels, musicians, flag-wavers and medieval banquet
  • on the 1st Sunday of September take place a parade of medieval costumes, horse-racing, torch-light procession, the burning of the Rocca

Arena
Vicenza and Palladio, 4 hours
  • arrival in Vicenza, the town known all over the wall as "the town of Palladio", surrounded by the Berici Hills
  • visit to the Olympic Theatre, built by Andrea Palladio for the representation of classical tragedies. Palladio began work on the theatre in 1580, a few months before his death, and it was completed in 1584 by V. Scamozzi; the latter also created the Fixed Scenes and the rooms known as the Olympic Odeo. The theatre is a surprising, magic place, made of wood and stucco according to a classic pattern; the fixed scenes represent the five streets of Thebes seen in perspective, but they are in fact idealized views of streets in Vicenza itself
  • nice walk among the historical squares; arrival in Piazza dei Signori, which has been the heart of activity in the town ever since the time of the Communes and also its "drawing room". The majestic construction in white Piovene stone which occupies the south side is the Basilica or Palazzo della Ragione, the symbolic monument of Vicenza. The Basilica includes the previous fifteenth-century Gothic buildings with a double order of Loggias (1549-1617), by Palladio. The rhythm of the construction is marked out by Serlian arches and columns; the building, inside which there is a grand hall (52 x 22 metres), is covered with a copper keel roof
  • visit to the Church of Santa Croce famous for the paintings of Bellini
  • visit to the Sanctuary of Monte Berico, a monumental group of buildings (1688-1703) to a design by C. Borella, incorporating the votive church in the Gothic style which the people of Vicenza erected, in 1428, on the site where the Virgin appeared to Vincenza Pasini during a terrible plague
  • time permitting visit to the Villa Valmarana ai Nani, whose name is linked with a poetic legend and with the little statues tha stand on the garden walls. It is made up of the main house (1699) attribuited to A. Muttoni and of the entrance, the guests' quarters and stables by F. Muttoni. In the main building and the guests' quarters there is a fantastic series of frescoes by Giambattista and Giandomenico Tiepolo

The Palladian Villas of Vicenza, 9 hours

Inside there is a vast round hall with stucco decorations by Rubini and frescoes by Maganza and L. Dorigny; in the walls are the doors towards the outside staircases and, in the four arms, other doors leading to four identical suites of rooms
  • visit to the Villa Valmarana ai Nani, whose name is linked with a poetic legend and with the little statues tha stand on the garden walls. It is made up of the main house (1699) attribuited to A.   • visit of the Villa Godi Valmarana Malinverni one of the first buildings of Andrea Palladio and dates back to 1540. The interiors were frescoed by three artists of 16th century veronese tradition. Battista Zelotti decorated most rooms painting muses and poets, exalting the classic Gods in the room of Olympus, Venus and Cupid
